Description
Description
The bullpup design has been applied for a longer time in automatic and semi-automatic firearms, among others. The advantage of this concept is that a longer barrel length is possible with a relatively short weapon, because the action and the barrel are located further back. This allows for a more compact whole, while retaining the performance of a long weapon. One of the biggest disadvantages of this design is that it means the pistol grip with the trigger no longer sits directly under the action. The consequence of this is that the trigger has to be connected to the action via long components, which usually results in relatively poor triggers.
Walther has managed to remedy this problem with the RS3, giving the weapon the advantages of a bullpup, while also having a very good trigger. It has a trigger pull of 800 grams, without the long, springy trigger travel that many bullpup weapons have. This makes it light enough to provide the required precision, without being too light in stressful moments or when the shooter is wearing gloves.
Another potential disadvantage of a bullpup is that the bolt can be in an inconvenient position to operate. This is certainly not the case with the Walther RS3 Heritage Sevenstar: the bolt is located directly above the trigger guard, making it quickly and easily accessible. Because the action has a straight-pull bolt, it is also very quick to operate, allowing a second shot to be fired as quickly as possible.
The balance of the Walther RS3 has played a central role in the design of the rifle. Because hunting with a suppressor is becoming more common worldwide, this has been incorporated into the design by equipping the RS3 with a specially designed suppressor. When this suppressor is attached to the barrel, the balance point is exactly between both hands, just in front of the trigger guard. A muzzle brake has also been developed, with which the rifle has exactly the same balance point. Thanks to the ideal balance, aiming with the RS3 is very natural and the rifle does not feel heavy or unwieldy in the hand, but is instead light and easy to control.
The way the weapon is cocked is very innovative. This is done by means of a button at the back of the pistol grip. By inserting the thumb into the thumbhole and placing it in the correct position around the pistol grip, the button can then be pushed forward. It then falls into a notch at the top, where it remains in place until it is pressed again and released. This makes it intuitive and quick to operate, even during the process of shouldering and aiming the RS3. This system also serves as a very reliable safety, because it cannot be fired without cocking the weapon.
